You Call That a Debate?
The so-called Pennsylvania 'Debate' hosted by ABC's George Stephanopoulos and Charles Gibson the other evening was so absurd that I almost didn't post on it (PBS's NewsHour summarized it well). Are these the prestigious interpretors of politics and culture for us? God help us!
I take less exception that they inquired about all the tabloid issues than I do with the fact that they didn't ask any question that would have gotten at any more than what we've already heard rehearsed over and over by the media ad nauseam. Will the real journalists among us please stand up?
As John Stewart points out, 60+ minutes in, at question #16, they finally got around to what they described as "the number one issue on voters' minds!" You can't make up absurdity this good.

Last night's The Daily Show with John Stewart had the best treatment of the Obama speech on race and politics that I heard all day:
He followed that up with an attempt at adulthood:
Colbert also got in on the act:
Then this morning I found this post and this write up on Colbert's interview with Samantha Powers of "Hillary is a monster!" fame.
And major media outlets wonder why a large portion of Americans get their news from these guys. At least they admit their biases upfront--InDecision 2008, Something Approximating Election News with Something Approximating Honesty.
I also found this and figured here was as good a place as any to drop it in:

Here's the question that motivates me: How do we tell the stories of our faith in such a way that others—particularly our children—don't have to re-traverse the same valley of shadows we've come through to retain faith?
Many parents have realized that if we share the stories of scripture with our children the way they were told to us, our kids could grow up as miseducated as we ourselves often feel. Why not equip them to chart new territory?
I invite you to join me in re-telling our stories. Submit your re-imaginings of the biblical narrative to the e-mail below, and let's see where God leads us.
Although we may intuitively recognize the need for a 'post-ism' articulation of the biblical narrative, it helps if we can prove a real market for it. Your activity on this blog does that. So don't neglect to invite friends!
